Vietnam Travel – A Stitch in Hoi An Makes…

A Stitch in Hoi An Makes for some pretty nice clothes. That’s what we hope anyway.

After a couple of busy, loud and enjoyable days in Hoi Chi Minh City, we flew to Da Nang, about 1000 km to the north and on the coast of the China Sea. From there we drove south for about on hour to a small town with a very big reputation.

Hoi An is an ancient city and recognized as a UN World Heritage Site. It is an artsy place and also has an incredible number of tailors and clothing shops where you can have custom made attire for very reasonable prices. Joan and I visited one such shop, Yaly, yesterday and I was fitted for 2 Mr Fabulous shirts and Joan for a cocktail dress and a wool jacket. Today we go back for a trial fitting and then the finished product should be ready tonight. They have books full of magazine pictures, designer clothes cataloges or you can bring your favorite piece and they can reproduce it Our Chef

. I’m sure this is how the knock offs from the Oscar gowns make it to the shops within days! I won’t reveal the price but you could get a custom made wardrobe from “swimwear to evening wear” (remember that old commercial with the Russian factory workers as runway models?) for under a $500.00, or so I’m told. By the way, someone asked if it was a sweatshop and we toured the sewing rooms and no children in sight.

Last evening we went to a Vietnamese cooking class. It was hosted by a lovely young lady at her riverside restaurant. It was a 5 course meal with sweet and sour chicken soup, spring rolls, green papaya salad and main courses of tuna steak cooked in banana leaves and eggplant caramelized in a clay pot. Yummy. We are all set to host some dinner parties with a Vietnamese theme.

Afterward, we strolled along the river to an area where lanterns of all sizes, shapes and colors were on display both on water and land. Truly amazing. Joan bought a couple for the cottage.

Today Joan is out for a bike ride in the countryside while I relax, soak up some rays and compose the blog. Tomorrow, we are “on the road again” to the ancient capital of Hue in Central Vietnam. As we’ve been traveling north, the temperatures are getting a bit cooler, mid 20’s instead of 30’s,very comfortable.
