GUIDES

Many travelers like to get up close and personal when visiting Vietnam.  A personal Vietnam Tour Guides will provide many services not available through traditional tour agencies.  They have many connections with people in out of the way places and know the hard to reach locations that are off the beaten path.  If you’re a Vietnam Traveler interested acquiring the services of a personal guide rather than going the Self-Guided Tour route or joining an organized Vietnam tour group,  you can contact a guide prior to departure and have him/her waiting when you land and say “good bye” when you leave.  I have a few guides (See Below) that I have spoken with and feel comfortable recommending.  I have also recommended that travelers find their own guide through Craigslist Vietnam, either by answering an ad or inserting an ad describing their requirements.  You can also hire local guides when you arrive at your next destination – ask at your hotel desk or wait for someone to approach you on the street.  I’ve found several great guides this way – “buyer beware”.

Dwight,
I am thinking about taking my 14 year old son to Vietnam for 3 weeks. We want to bring our backpacks and gear to do some hiking/camping in the parks in addition to seeing the cities. Is this practical, is it safe?
thanks, Jay

Sorry for the delay in answering. There are only a few places where “camping” as we know it is allowed. Local police tend to frown on travelers spending the night in private homes and other “unauthorized” locations. Check Halong Bay. Most other tours, like white water rafting and kayaking, are “day trips”. My advice is to travel as “light” as you can. You should be able to cover a lot of Vietnam in three weeks. Enjoy your trip!!
