Budget Traveler – Looking For Lodging

By Dwight Zimpel

Travelers with tight finances look to hostels. Originally a European phenomenon catering to students, hostels offer great lodging for those who don’t mind tight quarters or spartan furnishings.

Hostels offer adventure and the chance to meet those from different countries and cultures, but is not for everyone. Hostels can be the way to go for singles and small groups of younger travelers. It’s probably not for honeymooners or families with young children.

Bunk beds in a large open room are usually the sleeping arrangement in hostels, some may have smaller rooms with fewer bunks. Some rooms are arranged with 4 – 8 bunks – offering a bit more privacy for those in a group. Check-in procedures are pretty standard – you’re assigned a bed and given an verbal orientation or printed “rules of the house”.

Almost all hostels in the United States divide their accommodations according to gender, with the female guests in one block of rooms and the male clientele in another. Males and females may get a floor assigned by sex if the building is multi-story.

Outside the US, males and females may share lodging, make sure you inquire about sleeping arrangements if sharing a room with members of the opposite sex is a problem for you.

Bathroom and shower facilities vary from hostel to hostel. Some smaller rooms may have a semi-private bath. Some hostels have these facilities down the hall. Inquire about bathroom/shower arrangements in advance to avoid unpleasantness when you arrive.

If you’re traveling in the summer be sure to make a reservation, so there are no unpleasant surprises. As more people of all ages start to travel the demand for bargain accommodations increases – be sure to make a reservation. Make a reservation – Looking for a room at the last minute is a pain.

Price is the main attraction when staying at a hostel. The cost of a night’s stay depends on where you’re traveling in the world. An “inquiring mind” can save a $100 by choosing a hostel in the same block as a hotel.

Many hostel staff members are travelers in their own right and are pretty tuned in to needs of clientele. Most hostel staff members live the neighborhood and are knowledgeable about what is going on nearby.

Hostel staffers know why you’re staying with them – to save money. They will provide you with good information regarding restaurants, night life and other attractions a you are interested in.. They probably also know how to enjoy the high ticket attractions without paying the high ticket price.

Hostels aren’t for everyone – a good thing, otherwise they wouldn’t be so cheap! They’re in enterprise with the budget traveler – you – in mind. Staying at a hostel will stretch your travel dollar and expand your horizons. Value Traveler? Hostels Are The Way!

Angkor Wat – UNESCO World Heritage Site
By Aparana Chauhan

Cambodia is famous throughout the world for being the heritage site of the famous Angkor Wat, that remain hidden from the outside world until the French naturalist Henri Mahout discovered it strangled in the jungle area in 1860.

Angkor was once the capital of the ancient Khmer civilization, which survived some 500 years ago between the 9th century to 15 century existed, until it was pillaged by the Thai invaders in 1431. The capital flourished much in the 12th century, when the temple complex known as Angor Wat was constructed here followed by the Angkor Thom, the popular swayer city.

The temple complex – Angor Wat is worth a visit. It was built by King Suryavarman II as the noesis of the Mount Meru, the mythological consecrated center of the Hinduism. Encircled with the large fosse bridge by the stone causeway, it is the rectangular structure that comprises of three levels. The uppermost level, is particularly a spiritual center of the Buddhists Cambodians. It is adorned with the images of Lord Buddha. Check out the galleries of bas-reliefs – the longest in the world – portraying scenes from great Indian epics of Mahabharata and the battle scenes from the history of Khmer.

The views of Angkor Wat can be best experienced in the dim light of the early morning when the celestial rays of the sun enter into its walls. Even after 800 years of pillage and erosion, the temple is in good shape, which is actually the epitome of great artistry. And his is what makes it a must visit monument in the world. Some of the other popular attractions of Angkor are Bayon and Ta Prohm

Over the years, Angkor Wat has received great popularity among the tourists enthusiasts of visiting the historical sites. There are direct flights available from Bangkok to Thailand, that has made it a more easily accessible. It is a great place to spend time in peace and tranquility.
